It’s been really fun getting the chance to interact with MSEs from around the world, so we just wanted to thank you all for listening to this podcast and joining us as we uncover the unique ways materials science makes an impact all around us. In our fifth edition of Q&A, we will answer questions like:
🔹️What continues to be exciting in both of your jobs? What do you most look forward to during the average work day?
🔹️How much of what you learned while obtaining your MSE degree do you apply on a daily basis at work? How much of your job uses skills you gained outside of school?
🔹What have you observed about MSE’s in more senior roles? Does higher seniority come with more science-focused work or less?
🔹 And much more!

VEIR’s passive evaporative cryogenic cooling delivers 20 times the cooling power per kilogram of nitrogen flow compared to mechanical subcooling. VEIR’s innovations enable reliable, cost–effective HTS transmission over very long distances through narrow rights–of–way, connecting lowest cost renewable resources to where they’re needed, when they’re needed.
In today’s episode, we welcome Max Luke, the Director of Policy and Regulatory Affairs at VEIR, a company focused on developing superconducting transmission power lines. Max’s expertise is in advocacy for innovative technologies in the electric power and energy industries. With him, we discuss:
🔹️How VEIR’s technology is different than current and traditional transmission lines?
🔹️How specifically does technology help address this front versus legacy transmission line technology?
🔹VEIR transmission lines use liquid nitrogen to cool the transmission line below a certain temperature. Are there any safety implications related to the use of liquid nitrogen?
🔹 And much more!

According to research, what you say to an audience isn’t nearly as important as how you say it. Studies suggest that effective presentations are 38% your voice, 55% non-verbal communication, and only 7% your content. That means that you should spend even more time preparing your delivery than you do developing awesome content.
In today’s episode, we welcome Neil Thompson. Since earning his Master’s in Bioengineering and his Master’s in Biomedical Engineering from Clemson University and Columbia University, Neil has held various roles in biomedical engineering, technical communication, and with patent law. He is the founder of Teach the Geek, an educational network centered around enhancing the technical communication skills of STEM professionals. With him, we discuss:
🔹️ What audience does Neil primarily work with (i.e., students, 1-on-1 coaching, corporate seminars, etc.)?
🔹️Ideas on coaching strategy for this particular audience and these particular skills.
🔹Tips or common issues for students and early-career professionals to look out for while trying to improve their technical communication.

Monday Jan 30, 2023
We know an organic mind is a better learner than any digital model. It can switch tasks easily, and bring learnings from one task to another. But more important is what we don’t know. What are the limits of a mind connected to infinity? What can it do with data it literally lives in?
In today’s episode we welcome Hon Weng Chong, the CEO and Founder of Cortical Labs. He has founded several startups that focused on creating smartphone-based apps for personalized healthcare. At Cortical Labs, he currently focuses on bridging the gap between artificial intelligence and biological intelligence.
🔹️ The overarching goal of Cortical Labs and how this all started.
🔹️ How Cortical Labs trained neurons to play the video game Pong!
🔹 The vision for Cortical Labs and how its technology will make an impact in the future
🔹 Are there any materials science innovations that would boost one’s capabilities to train neurons?
🔹 And much more!

Every determined student must eventually ask themselves the age-old question: industry or academia? Professor, scientist, engineer, or manager?
In today’s episode we welcome Dr. Shan Jiang, Associate Professor at Iowa State University. He defies this traditional mindset with his rich experience in both industry and academia. He specifically leverages these experiences with Janus particles, a type of nanoparticle that enables two bonded sides with distinctly different chemistries.
🔹️ What a Janus particle is and how it’s different from normal chemistries
🔹 Which field(s) will be most impacted by continued research into Janus particles?
🔹 What the challenges are in applying these particles in real-life applications?
